At SSP, we’re committed to nurturing talent and creating pathways for growth at every stage of a career. This month, we’re proud to spotlight Ryan Brook, Portfolio Manager in our Broker VBU, who has successfully completed his Leadership & Management apprenticeship. Ryan’s story is one of long-term growth, continuous development, and a genuine passion for leading others.
A Journey Rooted in Growth
Ryan has been part of the SSP family for over 12 years, steadily progressing through roles in Quality Assurance, Business Analysis, and Project Management. Today, he leads some of our most strategic programmes - most notably, Programme Compass, a cornerstone initiative within SSP Broker.
"As part of my development plan, we identified the leadership apprenticeship as a way to enhance my skills – not just to be a better manager, but a better person,” says Ryan
Learning, Leading, and Levelling Up
Ryan’s apprenticeship focused on four pillars of effective leadership:
- Building a high-performing team
- Project management
- Organisational governance
- Self-management
For Ryan, the biggest highlight was developing a deeper understanding of his team and how to help them thrive.
“I really enjoyed understanding how my team operates and identifying ways we can improve together. The professional discussions with my tutor helped me reflect and measure my growth”
The impact has been far-reaching. Improved communication skills have empowered Ryan to step outside his day job - delivering career talks at local schools and volunteering in CV workshops for students.
Rising to the Challenge
Balancing a demanding role with the pressures of an apprenticeship wasn’t easy - but Ryan met the challenge head-on.
“Time management was tough. But with some careful planning—and a few late nights—I made it work. My team and manager were incredibly supportive throughout. ”
That support, paired with Ryan’s dedication, ensured he kept momentum and completed the programme with pride.
Looking Ahead
Now, with his apprenticeship complete, Ryan is applying his new skills to drive impact across the business.
“I’ve been busy aligning how our projects operate and supporting my team’s development. I’m excited to keep growing and to lead Programme Compass into its next phase. ”
When asked what advice he’d give to others thinking about an apprenticeship, his message is simple:
“Grab it with both hands. SSP invests in its people – and if you’re willing to work hard, the rewards are absolutely worth it. ”
