SSP Apprentice Spotlight - Bilkish Karolia
Bilkish Karolia - Project Management, Insurer VBU

At SSP, we’re passionate about recognising and supporting future leaders -people who take initiative, embrace challenges, and grow with every opportunity. This month, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Bilkish Karolia, who has successfully completed her Project Management apprenticeship with a distinction!
Bilkish’s story is one of thoughtful choices, perseverance, and professional growth - and it’s only just beginning.
Finding the Right Path
After finishing college, Bilkish took a bold and considered step: she pressed pause.
“I decided to take a gap year because I wasn’t completely sure the university path I had chosen was right for me,” she explains.
“During that time, I discovered project management. I loved that it involved organisation, communication, and problem-solving - and gave me the chance to bring ideas to life.”
That discovery became a new direction. Rather than heading straight to university, Bilkish pursued an apprenticeship, combining structured learning with valuable real-world experience.
Why SSP?
For Bilkish, SSP’s values, people, and positive culture made it an easy decision.
“SSP really aligned with what I was looking for. It's a company that not only delivers great work but also creates a positive, encouraging environment for its people and community.”
The blend of formal learning, on-the-job experience, and mentorship provided the ideal foundation to grow her career in project management.
“I knew SSP was somewhere I could grow, challenge myself, and build something meaningful.”
The Art of Balance
Juggling live projects, learning modules, and portfolio work is no small task. For Bilkish, developing time management and prioritisation skills became key to her success.
“There were definitely times when it felt overwhelming, especially during busy project periods,” she admits.
“But breaking things into smaller steps and staying consistent , even on the low-motivation days, made a huge difference.”
That approach paid off - culminating not just in a distinction, but a newfound confidence and resilience that shines through in her work.
From Supporting to Leading
One of Bilkish’s proudest milestones has been stepping up from supporting projects to leading them.
“At the start, I was mainly helping out with tasks and learning as I went. Now, I’m managing Small Change projects from start to finish. It’s amazing to see how much I’ve grown.”
She credits both her apprenticeship and the people around her for shaping her own working style and project management approach.
Supported Every Step of the Way
Behind every successful apprentice is a strong support system - and Bilkish is the first to highlight her team’s role in her journey.
“My manager and colleagues were incredibly supportive from day one. Whether it was keeping my portfolio on track, prepping for assessments, or just offering encouragement, they were always there.”
Ahead of her End-Point Assessment (EPA), her team even ran mock interviews and helped her rehearse responses, ensuring she was confident and prepared.
“They also helped me see that real-world project management doesn’t always follow a textbook. Their guidance helped me bridge the gap between theory and practice.”
Looking Ahead
Now that she’s completed her apprenticeship, Bilkish is stepping into her next chapter with a clear sense of purpose.
“I’m really proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m still learning every day. I’ve taken on more responsibility and I’m excited to keep growing my role at SSP.”
Words of Wisdom
For anyone considering an apprenticeship, Bilkish offers thoughtful advice:
“Go for it! Stay organised, make the most of the support around you, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Keep on top of your portfolio from the start - even the small tasks matter. And be open-minded! You might discover something unexpected that becomes what you love most.”
Quick Fire Fun Facts:
-
One word your team would use to describe you?
"Determined… or logical, with a bit of crazy!" -
Gantt chart or Kanban board?
"Kanban board – always!" -
Hidden talent or fun fact?
“Not exactly a talent, but in high school I was a paid extra on a TV show, and even got offered another role afterwards!”
Congratulations, Bilkish!
Achieving a distinction is an incredible accomplishment and a testament to your hard work, curiosity, and commitment. Your journey is a brilliant reminder of the power of apprenticeships - and we can’t wait to see what you do next at SSP.
