SSP Apprentice Spotlight

Ben Farrar - Incident Associate, SSP Broker VBU

At SSP, we’re passionate about supporting the next generation of tech talent. This month, we’re delighted to introduce Ben Farrar, a Digital Support Technician apprentice who’s making his mark in our SSP Broker VBU team. Ben’s journey is a brilliant example of how curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to learn can lead to exciting new career paths.

From Airsoft to IT: Ben’s Unusual Route Into Tech

Before joining SSP, Ben worked as a Distribution Manager at an Airsoft retail store - a world away from the fast-paced software environment he’s in now. Despite enjoying that role, Ben always had an interest in IT. He saw an apprenticeship as the ideal way to gain hands-on experience and build a strong foundation in a field he was passionate about.

“SSP was an easy choice,” Ben says. “It’s close to home, and during the interview process, I saw how many future pathways there were. That made my decision even easier.”

Now, as an Incident Associate, Ben supports key clients like RAC and One Call, handling user requests, resolving technical issues, and managing account changes. It’s a role that’s both challenging and rewarding - and one that has seen Ben flourish.

The Apprenticeship Experience: Learning on the Job

Throughout his apprenticeship, Ben has gained valuable skills in everything from customer service to troubleshooting. He’s embraced opportunities to collaborate with other apprentices and discover how different parts of the business operate.

One of his standout achievements: Building his apprenticeship portfolio - a detailed reflection of his growth and learning:

“It shows how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve come. Some of the criteria were tough, like proving knowledge of ‘emerging technologies’, but working through those challenges taught me a lot.”

He’s also mastered SSP’s helpdesk system, which he calls a “game-changer” for streamlining and managing support tasks.

Working Life at SSP

Ben credits his progress to the supportive environment at SSP, where structured guidance, cross-team learning, and regular check-ins have helped him thrive.

“I’ve had training on backups, the Select system and Pure - even though I don’t work directly on them. It’s great to understand the bigger picture.”

Having access to protected learning hours and being surrounded by a team willing to invest in his development has made all the difference.

What’s Next for Ben?

As Ben’s apprenticeship draws to a close, he’s looking to the future with ambition and excitement.

“My long-term goal is to work in Cyber Security - it’s something I’ve always been passionate about. I’m ready to keep learning and pushing myself to get there.”

And his advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship?

“If you’re willing to work hard, go for it. There will be challenges, but it’s absolutely worth it in the end.”
